Berk was adopted and raised in Mount Vernon, Missouri, in the middle of Amish farm country. Growing up, Berk faced both external and internal homophobia.
At the age of 15, Berk left home and moved to Springfield, Missouri. He faced lots of problems, sometimes living on the street. Later, he got a job at Applebee’s, in Branson, where he would sleep in his car after working double shifts four days in a row.
Just before Berk turned 18, he relocated to Denver, Colorado. There he got a gig at the Bombay Company.
Career
In 2003, Berk landed in New York City with just $100 in his pocket. Eventually, he found a job at Restoration Hardware, Bath, Bed, and beyond. Further, he moved on to Portico and joined a high-end home furnishing company.

With no high school certificate or official training, Berk started working his way up to creative director. After Portico folded in 2006, he launched his online venture, initially in New York City a year later. Miami followed in 2010.
